Project 42 Radio

The old stuff. The new stuff. All the stuff in between.

Now you can see what’s playing now (and the four previously played songs) on the front page. Just look a little down and to your right. We’ve also added more features to the list. Hover your mouse over any song on the list, and you’ll see the ratings figure. Just click to rate a song from one to five stars. There are links to song, artist, album and concert information. Finally, you can buy an mp3 of the song through Amazon.com. We make a tiny bit of money if you buy the mp3 through that link, which helps keep the generators running around here, so I hope you’ll consider using that link if you’re in the mood to buy.

In the works is an expanded “Now Playing” page in addition to the front page list. Once it’s done, it will allow you to see everything that’s played the previous hour, with all the functionality of the smaller list.

Blue October – “Should Be Loved”
Bon Jovi – “Superman Tonight”
Corinne Bailey Rae – “The Blackest Lily”
Vampire Weekend – “Cousins”

We’ll be off the air from midnight to 1 a.m. Central Standard Time while we move to a new server. Thanks for your understanding.

Update: We’re up and running on the new server. Both our broadband and dialup streams are now sounding even better. The address of our launch page has changed slightly, so if you’ve bookmarked it, you should change it to

The old launch page will be up until March 22, but you can’t listen from there.

Thrown into the big ‘ol music mixer this week…

Melissa Etheridge – “Fearless Love”

Broken Bells – “The High Road”

Hockey – “Song Away”

Lady Gaga w/Beyonce – “Telephone”

Over at the Facebook site, we’ve asked people for opinions on how much new music, if any, to play here in the Secret Broadcast Cave.  John’s response:

New music — yes.
American Idol-based music — no.
There is pop beyond the "Idol" juggernaut!!!

John makes a good point.  We do like some of the music from the Idol phenomenon – though, to be honest, we can count the artists we like from the show on one hand and still have fingers left over.  We can’t totally ignore it, though, since we don’t answer to anyone else, we can be more selective when we want (and that’s why you don’t hear much Nickelback here.)

We’re non-commerical here at Project 42, and that means we have to run on someone else’s hamster wheel to keep the generators on here in the cave.  The down side of that is we don’t have as much time for music discovery as we’d like. So, in this thread, we’re asking for your suggestions.

If there’s an artist we’re missing, tell us here.  Give us a song title or two to consider; website links would also be helpful.  We’ll consider any of them at least once, but excessively vulgar or violent lyrics are automatically out.  If we add your suggestion to the library, we’ll acknowledge it here so all seventeen of the people who read this will know that you have excellent taste.  Click the comments link at the top of this post to get started!

We’ve recieved our first donation towards the Project 42 Radio Operating Fund. I’d mention them by name, but I don’t know if they want to be named, so for now, we’ll just say thanks.

In the future, we’ll acknowledge everyone who donates here, but only if you wish to be. Otherwise, we’ll just call you “Anon E. Moose” or something like that. As always, donations are strictly voluntary. Don’t give unless you’re able. We hope you like what we’re doing here, but in the end, there are always more important things to take care of first.

Thanks for listening!

–Don

The famous recording studio is being sold by recording label EMI.  So if you have a few spare pounds under the cushions…okay, you’d better have a lot of cushions.

…because sometimes, you just gotta dance.
